Marine monitoring programme

Monitoring of Benthic soft-bottom fauna along the Swedish West coast

The soft-bottom macrofauna is monitored at 33 localities along the west coast of Sweden by comission of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with “Bohuskustens vattenvårdsförbund” and the counties of Västra Götaland and Halland. The purpose of the investigation is to detect changes in the marine environment, principally those caused by eutrophication and oxygen deficiency and to detect long time changes in diversity of the soft-bottom fauna. Sampling is carried out in May and the main results are presented in "Havet" each year. www.havet.nu

Monitoring of Primary phytoplankton productivity

Primary phytoplankton productivity has since 1985 been measured in the mouth area of the Gullmar Fjord, as a part of the Swedish marine monitoring program. As a mean 20 measurement per year is made by performing the 14C-technique in situ. The results so far suggest that the primary production in the mouth area of the Gullmar Fjord during 1985 – 2008 has been controlled by the coupling of large climatic decadal patterns such as the NAO and the subsequent changes in the nutrient regime at a regional scale including the Skagerrak.
