Research

Hans Blanck is leading a research group in marine and freshwater ecotoxicology focused on improving the ecological relevance of ecotoxicological concepts and methodologies.

The early research was focused on the development of new methods and concepts that could be used in various environments to detect effects of pollutants on natural communities of algae and bacteria. The PICT approach was developed as a means to couple cause and effect in the ecosystem by exploiting the specificity of chemical selection pressures. Often a combination of field and microcosm approaches was used. Community dynamics, toxicant-induced succession, productivity, genetic variability, tolerance mechanisms and properties and efficacy of the new community are major research interests. Metal(oid)s, herbicides, antifouling compounds and presently pharmaceuticals have been investigated.

Current focus is on predictive methods for analysing mixture toxicity at the community level and to exploit and develop molecular techniques (metagenomics, community finger-printing) in order to improve specificity and resolution in community ecotoxicological studies. Recent projects have also given the chance to use ecotoxicological and risk assessment skills proactively, to help designing new antifouling coatings. At present he has been and is co-leading the multidisciplinary MISTRA research programme “Marine Paint”.

Hans Blanck is leading the Research Area ECOTOXICOLOGY at DPES.
He is presently involved in consolidating and developing Ecotoxicology at UGOT, e.g. in the research platform “Ecotoxicology from gene to ocean”.
Hans Blanck is a member of the

Epipsammon community

Community ecotoxicology deals with effects on natural multispecies systems like the marine sand-living communities called epipsammon (greek for “on sand”). At the surface of sand grains yellow-brownish diatom species and bluegreen colony-forming cyanobacteria cells can be seen.
PICT will respond when the most sensitive of these species are replaced by more tolerant ones.
