Research Area

The high degree of chemical pollution in aquatic ecosystems and the decrease in biodiversity and community functions have raised the urgent need for ecotoxicological studies using natural communities, such as periphyton and biofilms. My research group focuses on assessing the presence and effects of chemicals (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, metals), microplastics, and wastewater microorganisms on algal and microbial biodiversity changes, tolerance development, primary production, general carbon metabolism, and contaminant transformation in a situation of global change. We usually combine field and lab-based approaches with classical methods (eg. in vivo toxicity testing, chl fluorescence techniques, pigment analysis, PICT approach, 14C and H-incorporation, enzymatic activities, degradation bioassays, HPLC-MS, flow cytometry) and DNA- and RNA-based methods (eg. qPCR, metabarcoding, genomics, and transcriptomics). The final goal of our research is to protect our environment from chemical pollution to ensure healthy aquatic environments that benefit both the aquatic biodiversity and society in general.

My research group "Algal and Microbial Ecotoxicology (AME)" is part of the Aquatic Ecotoxicology research area.

Teaching and supervising

Currently, the portion of my time that is dedicated to teaching is around 30-40%. I am involved in bachelor and master courses focused on ecology, ecotoxicology, and environmental impact assessment. I am the course leader of ES1220, Ecology, and Evolution for Environmental Scientists, ES2615 Fundamentals in Ecotoxoxicology, and ES2616, Advanced Environmental Methods, and highly involved in BIO430, Ecotoxicology at the community level.
