"Current Concepts in Scientific Best Practice: Generating Robust Results in Biology"

Background to this workshop: That there currently is considerable debate regarding reproducibility and best practice in science is perhaps captured no better than by the title of John Ioannides´ article in PLoS Medicine "Why most research findings are false" (2005). Is it really that bad, you may ask? This Workshop intends to confront and discuss these problems, while providing constructive advice on how to achieve better robustness and repeatability in biological sciences. Given how quickly this field is changing, we encourage not only PhD students but any practicing researcher to make time for this workshop. The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences covers a broad range of disciplines and we have attempted to cover this in the spectrum of lectures (although unavoidably some disciplines develop more theoretical analyses than others). Importantly, the goal here is to address important concepts and questions, not favor particular biological disciplines or taxa. With this approach, we hope that we will develop new research ideas and improved scientific rigor based on lectures and discussions. The Workshop has two "levels", Open Lectures followed by Discussion groups in the afternoons (which generate three PhD points for postgraduate students though everyone is invited to participate). We are very fortunate that our main speaker, Prof. Shinichi Nakagawa, University of New South Wales, Australia, has deep insight in all aspects of this workshop and his papers are complemented with select publications by other authors. We are also grateful for topical contributions by our local researchers (Profs. Andersson, Dahllöf, Jörnsten). Listed PDFs are required reading for receiving points in the PhD program (PDF tips refer to previously sent out reading material). However, should reading of these PDFs not be possible in full before the workshop, given the relatively short time frame, a follow-up Discussion group will be held subsequent to the Workshop in which participation will satisfy point criteria.

Venue: The Zoology Bldg, Department pf Biological and Environmental Sciences, Medicinaregatan 18. Large lecture Theatre. Go straight through three sets of doors (including entrance), take a sharp right, go to the end of the corridor.
Foods and Drinks: Coffee, the and biscuits will be available all day at the back of the lecture theatre. Three lunch restaurants are available within 10-15 min walking distance ("Lyktan" [50 m from Zoology], ¿Blå huset¿ [downhill behind the parking deck], and ¿Lunchen¿ [across from Dept. Odontology]). Dinner Friday night will be an open restaurant visit somewhere affordable and convenient [to be announced].
