Welcome to us

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we give courses and programs and conducts research within areas that deals with the  world around us. Biology is the the study of life, that is all living organisms and the processes that control them, whereas environmental sciences focus on the interplay between humans and nature.

You find us that work at the department in the Botanical building (close to the Botanical garden) and the Zoology building (at Medicinareberget) in Gothenburg as well as at Kristineberg marine station in Fiskebäckskil.

Our research areas

To spread knowledge about biology and environmental sciences to different parts of the society is a central part of our activities. A deeper understanding of how organisms are built, function and interact with and are affected by each other and the surrounding nature is necessary to be able to form informed decisions that may have great impact on the future of our planet.

Our research stretches from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment, and include a variety of organisms and species. The overall aim is to understand how species have evolved and adapted, and the importance of and natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.
