Sugar from Waste

John Schollar
NCBE, University of Reading, UK

This activity is designed to help pupils gain a better understanding of enzyme activity, some simple economics and investigative design, as well as developing presentation skills. Pupils have to select enzymes and then investigate their effect on carbohydrate “waste” from a factious prebiotic food company. The pupil´s task is to convert the carbohydrates in the waste to glucose and to achieve the highest possible levels for minimum cost. Each group will need to give a presentation, since they are tendering for a contract.
