Review features

These illustrated feature articles aim to provide readers with a concise (4–6 page) introduction to key topics in modern bioscience. The style and level of difficulty of the document should be similar to that of a typical Scientific American article.

Where appropriate, review features should highlight current or potential applications of the topic plus any issues raised by the research and/or its application.

Review features will be illustrated by Bioscience Explained staff, based on the guidance you provide. If your paper is accepted for publication you may be asked for additional information to help with the illustration.

Refereeing process for review features

Initial selection will be done by the Editor and if appropriate, the Associate editors. Articles that are deemed inappropriate for publication in Bioscience Explained will be returned to the author without review.

Documents that pass this first stage will be reviewed anonymously. Where necessary, articles will be translated into English before submission to at least two referees. Authors will then be advised as to whether the article has been accepted for publication by the Journal, whether revision is requested before publication, or if the article is unsuitable for publication in Bioscience Explained.

Where revision has been requested, the referees and Editor will try to give as much guidance as possible.

Resubmitted, revised articles should be accompanied by a brief note describing the alterations that have been made to address the reviewers' concerns. Where the author has chosen to ignore the reviewers' comments, a justification must be provided.

Proofs will be e-mailed to the author as Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files for comment before publication.

Please note that the Editor's decision regarding publication is final.
