About Natàlia Corcoll Cornet

Research Area

My research focuses on the effects and consequences of chemical pollution on the biodiversity and ecological functions of aquatic microbial communities, and in developing tools for chemical risk assessment. I am also interested in understanding the mechanisms of tolerance development.

I use algae and periphyton communities (so-called biofilms) as biological models. They are considered important sources of food and oxygen production in rivers and coastal areas. I combine field and laboratory approaches to understand the structural, physiological and molecular mechanisms by which biofilms respond and adapt to chemical stress (eg. metals, pharmaceutical compounds, pesticides…), as well as to other environmental stressors (eg. desiccation, light, temperature…) that might co-occur in the nature (multi-stress).

Current Projects:

2016-2019. HERBEVOL - Exploring the links between HERBicides pollution and algal microEVOLution: implications for ecosystem services. PI: N. Corcoll. The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) as a Mobility starting grant for young researchers.

2012-2016/2017. NICE - Novel instruments for effect-based assessment of chemical pollution in coastal ecosystems. PI: T. Backhaus. The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (Formas) as a Strong research environment project.
