About Alexander Ventura

I am investigating the adaptation potential of commercially important bivalve molluscs, such as the blue mussel and the Pacific oyster, to ocean acidification.This process, which consists in an increase in ocean acidity linked to human induced rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration, can have negative effects on marine organisms including mussels and oysters which have calcium carbonate shells. These animals may find it harder to produce and/or maintain their shells in more acidic water.

However living organisms are able to adapt to changes in their environment through evolutionary processes.

Understanding if and how bivalves can adapt to ocean acidification is the focus of my PhD project.
